Americus-Sumter High School temporarily suspends football and band practice due to COVID-19

AMERICUS – Americus-Sumter High School has decided to temporarily suspend the summer workouts and summer practice sessions of its football team and marching band due to concerns involving COVID-19. According to ASHS Athletic Director Coleman Price, a member of the football coaching staff was recently exposed to someone who has tested positive for the virus and a member of the marching band has tested positive for COVID-19.

Price stated that as a precaution, both football summer workouts and summer band practices have been suspended for 14 days and that all of the parents have been notified concerning both situations.

ASHS Head Football Coach Ross Couch told the Americus Times-Recorder that while neither that assistant football coach nor any players have tested positive for the virus, the school is still taking this precautionary measure. “WE had no one test positive,” said Couch. “No one in our program has the virus, but we did shut down as a precautionary measure per Coach Price, Mr. Hadley and Dr. Choates.”

Couch went on to say that after the 14-day suspension, he expects for the practices to resume and that all of the parents have been notified about the situation.

While ASHS Band Director Deborah Hughes could not be reached for comment, Price said that the ASHS Marching Band has suspended its summer practices for 14 days in lieu of the student testing positive for the Coronavirus.

He went on to emphasize that in both situations, all of the parents of the football players and the band members have been notified about both situations.
